Pennsylvania woman killed in car accident; driver left the scene

There is a saying that no good deed goes unpunished. Unfortunately, that seems to have come true for a Pennsylvania woman. She and her boyfriend were picking up a dead deer off the road that had been hit by another vehicle when she was struck by a box truck. The driver of the truck in this car accident did not stop.

It happened around 7 p.m. on Nov. 21. The couple was putting the deer into their vehicle when a box truck slammed into the back of it, killing the woman. The road was closed for several hours as police conducted their investigation, including an accident reconstruction.

In the meantime, officers from several law enforcement agencies began searching for the box truck and driver involved in the crash. The truck, which belonged to a contracting company out of Baltimore, Maryland, was located not far from the accident scene. However, the driver was missing, though he was finally located hiding in some bushes near a residence in the area. He was arrested for DUI and for driving under the influence on a suspended license. Authorities report that more charges may be filed against the driver.

Drunk driving accidents are some of the most preventable accidents on the road, yet thousands of people driving in Pennsylvania are victimized by them each year -- sometimes with deadly consequences such as in this car accident. This woman's boyfriend, friends and family are grieving for her loss, and though they may ultimately accept that she won't return, nothing can ever replace her. If the family prevails in a wrongful death action for damages incurred due to her loss, it may give them some measure of peace that they obtained some justice on her behalf. These types of legal claims are based upon evidence of negligence that is deemed to have proximately caused a fatal accident.
