Motor vehicle accidents and pedestrians: a dangerous problem

On Behalf of | Oct 29, 2015 | Car Accidents

There are many reasons why a Pennsylvania resident would choose to travel by foot. Whether it is for necessity, convenience, exercise or recreation, pedestrians have the right to expect that drivers will safely share the road. Sadly, many drivers choose to engage in risky or negligent behavior, causing motor vehicle accidents that inflict serious physical and emotional harm.

Pedestrians are unprotected against the impact of the steel frame of a vehicle. Even “minor” pedestrian accidents can result in serious injuries that require extensive medical treatment and lengthy recovery. According to the Center for Disease Control, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely to die in a car crash than those who are in a vehicle. The elderly comprise nearly 20 percent of all pedestrian accident deaths, and children are also at a particularly high risk.

When a driver is impaired by alcohol, he or she is prone to swerve, speed or fail to stop at intersections. Distracted drivers often display similar behaviors, increasing the risk of striking a person. All drivers have the special responsibility of safely sharing the road with pedestrians. In many cases, pedestrians have legitimate grounds to file a personal injury claim against a liable driver.

Motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians are a serious problem. Pennsylvania residents who have been harmed by the negligent or reckless actions of another person may take steps to protect their legal rights by seeking the help of a lawyer. A legal ally can determine what options are available and help the claimant move forward with the appropriate legal steps.
