Collisions involving large trucks have the potential to result in numerous fatalities, and as a result of this risk the trucking industry is regulated by both federal agencies and the state of Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, many trucking companies neglect to abide by regulations, as do individual truck drivers. The consequences for this are accidents, injuries and deaths.
For example, it often turns out that trucking accidents are caused by truckers who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A recent report took a look at why so many truck drivers are so negligent.
The report was drafted by a team at the State University of Londrina, Brazil, and it concluded that younger drivers and drivers who are paid worse than others are more likely to partake in substance abuse behind the wheel.
The research involved a review of 36 studies that have been conducted on the topic worldwide, including here in the U.S.
While the review did not determine exactly why drivers make such poor and dangerous decisions, it found that in addition to poorly paid drivers and younger drivers, several other groups are likely to use drugs or consume alcohol on the job. Those groups include drivers who drive often at night, those who take longer trips, drivers who get less rest and those who are alcohol-drinkers.
It is very scary to think that a significant number of truck drivers passing through Pennsylvania could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Truck accidents cause catastrophic injuries. Those who are injured in truck accidents should seek legal counsel to learn about their rights to hold drivers and/or trucking companies accountable.
