Safety tips for Pennsylvania motorcyclists

Among the most deadly of all motor vehicle accidents are those involving motorcycles. With no airbags, seatbelts or protective frames; frequently the body of a motorcycle rider or passenger is the collision impact point. Consequently, those impacted often suffer devastating injuries including brain injuries, lost limbs, crushed or broken bones, burns and road rash.

Due to their size, motorcycles are often difficult for drivers of other motor vehicles to see. It's important, therefore, that when operating a motorcycle, an individual obeys traffic laws, is alert and vigilant and drives defensively.

The following safety tips can help motorcyclists avoid both being involved and fatally injured in a traffic accident.

• Always wear a helmet while on a motorcycle
• Obey all traffic laws - do not speed, signal well in advance of any lane changes and don't tailgate
• Avoid distractions while driving
• Never drink and drive

Additionally, individuals who ride motorcycles are subject to other hazards such as weather, road debris and burns from a motorcycle's engine. It's important, therefore, to wear property safety gear. Recommended protective and safety gear include:

• Motorcycle helmet
• Protective eyewear
• Long sleeve shirt and pants
• Sturdy shoes or boots
• Gripped gloves

Individuals who are injured in a motorcycle accident or who have had a loved one injured or killed in a motorcycle accident may choose to take legal action. In cases where it's determined that another driver's negligent actions caused a motorcycle accident, a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit can aid in recovering compensation related to injuries, disability, medical expenses and lost wages.
