Five fatalities on Pennsylvania roads to begin holiday season

The holiday season is always so full of promise, of family get-togethers, of Currier and Ives images of homes and hearths decorated for the season. But it is also full of the promise of negligent driving, of motorists driving too fast and too intoxicated to control their vehicles, leading to deadly crashes that devastate families during the holidays.

As the first holiday of the season, Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania again left some families not thankful, but grieving, dumbfounded how their loved-one could have been taken from them, as motor vehicle accidents caused five deaths during the four-day holiday period.

And sadly, there were 1,268 total crashes, leaving 239 people injured and 5 fatalities. The Pennsylvania State Police wrote 9,301 speeding tickets and made 435 DUI arrests. As a reminder of the danger of drinking and driving, 66 of the crashes involved a driver who was intoxicated and three of the five fatalities were alcohol related.

While an improvement from last year's death toll of nine fatal crashes, it is difficult to speak of this as an improvement. Five families will be dealing with the pain and emotional stress of losing a father or mother, husband or wife, a child or sibling.

They will struggle with the financial crisis of how to make up for lost income or to cope with the emotional loss and the absence of someone who is gone and will never attend another family gathering.

These loses never occur in isolation, and remember to exercise additional caution as you go about your holiday events, to ensure that you and other will enjoy the future holidays that are yet to come.
