Some talk of expanding Social Security benefits

On Behalf of | Mar 26, 2014 | Social Security Disability

Pennsylvanians are often hard working people that will do everything they can to support themselves. For years, people may go to work, collect a wage and pay their taxes. Part of these taxes go to support the Social Security system. Social Security is, therefore, supposed to be available to these people if the unthinkable should happen and help to support them in their old age. More often than many people realize, people are involved in difficult accidents that make it impossible for them to work.

In these cases, a mental or physical illness or disability prevents these people from seeking employment. Therefore, these people need Social Security benefits – which they have been contributing too through taxes – to be able to pay for necessary expenses. Social security benefits can often be the only thing keeping some people from total destitution.

Recently, there has been a drive by many candidates for public office around the country to expand Social Security benefits and make it easier for people to collect. These supporters of expanding benefits include Pennsylvania state senator Daylin Leach. This expansion of Social Security could include changing the cost of living formula and eliminating payroll tax caps. If enough support is garnished for the idea, specific bills could be presented before Congress. However, many still see this as being a long shot in the current economy.

Whether or not Social security is expanded, those in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania who need its protections should fight for their rights to their hard earned benefits. The process for applying for benefits can be difficult and the government is known to deny a person’s application. Therefore, people need to understand their legal rights when applying for disability coverage. With the right help, Pennsylvania residents can get the money they need and deserve.
