In a serious car accident, do you know how much is enough?

When a truck or car accident happens, you may hope for the best. If the other driver was clearly responsible, you may think that you can rely on their insurance company to offer you a fair settlement that fully compensates you for the damage and harm you have suffered. Whether the car accident occurs right here in Chambersburg, somewhere else in Pennsylvania or in some other state, you may not want to trust in the charity of the other driver’s insurance company.

Insurance companies are in business to make money, not to pay compensation to victims. While their advertising materials may suggest otherwise, there is a good reason you should have your own attorney when dealing with any claims. They do not want to pay your claim. In fact, the goal of much of their claims procedures is to minimize or deny outright all claims.

A recent study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) underlines the amount of money at stake. The bare economic costs of motor vehicle accidents in 2010 were $277 billion. NHTSA estimates that the long-term cost of a “critically injured survivor” from a car accident is $1.1 million.

Much of that cost is comprised of medical expenses the injured survivor will incur over their remaining lifetime. If you or a member of your family were seriously injured, how would you judge the fairness of a settlement amount offered by an insurance company?

Most individuals have little or no experience estimating the enormous sums necessary for a lifetime of medical care. An experienced attorney brings the knowledge and resources to accurately determine what amount will provide adequate compensation for your injuries.

The NHTSA study highlights the important of driving safely and of all motorists working to reduce the tragic, billion dollar consequences of motor vehicle accidents.
