Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign in place for Labor Day

The Labor Day weekend begins officially at 6 pm tonight in Pennsylvania, and with comes the grim prospect of drunk driving accidents and deaths. The Pennsylvania State Police, local police and PennDOT are all working together in an attempt to minimize those numbers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is the national sponsor of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over safety campaign, and law enforcement nationwide are participating in an effort to raise awareness of the risk posed to all motorist by drunk drivers on long holiday weekends like Labor Day.

People go to the mountains, their cabins, a resort or just their backyard, have BBQs and parties. Sure, there will be alcohol, but everyone understands the risk. Or do they? In Pennsylvania in 2013, there were 54,121 arrests for drunk driving. Apparently someone did not get the message.

Just last year on Labor Day there were 197 alcohol- and drug-related car accidents in the state, with seven deaths. Look around before you leave work today. You could work with someone who won’t return on Monday, or any other day.

If you are involved in an alcohol-related crash, even if you are not killed, you have no idea what your condition will be when you leave the hospital. Maybe it will just be a minor, but annoying, pain in the neck, caused by some pinched nerve.

Or, it could be that you will be paralyzed from the neck down with a permanent spinal injury. With luck, and expensive surgery, you may be able to sit in a motorized wheelchair and regain some mobility.

But for a drink? Just imagine how inexpensive that cab fare would look from that vantage point.
