Distracted driving: an increased chance of a car accident

The dangers of texting and driving are well-documented, but this dangerous behavior continues to be a problem in Pennsylvania and across the country. One reason that this behavior is so dangerous is that it involves all three types of distraction: cognitive, manual and visual. Drivers who text behind the wheel have an increased chance of causing a car accident, inflicting harm on themselves and others.

Texting involves visual distraction, which is the driver taking his or her eyes off the road. Manual distraction involves the driver’s hands actually leaving the wheel, such as to hold a phone. Cognitive distraction occurs when the driver appears to be focused, yet is thinking of other matters and not paying attention to the road. Texting is a serious problem, but other types of distracted driving include talking to passengers, putting on makeup and eating.

It is thought that distracted driving takes a person’s attention off the road for at least five seconds. Texting drivers often display the same behaviors behind the wheel as a drunk driver, also facing a risk for an accident that is four times higher. The National Safety Council estimates that as many as 28 percent of all motor vehicle accidents are related to phone use in some capacity.

Motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted driving can result in serious injury or even the death of an innocent Pennsylvania motorist. Fortunately, there are ways by which an injured victim or family can seek recovery of damages related to a car accident. A lawyer can determine the viability of a possible personal injury claim and help move forward with the process.
