Veterans’ Social Security disability claims to be expedited

Our country’s veterans have put their lives on the line for the betterment of America and the world. When they come home, they expect and deserve to be treated with dignity. Yet, veterans have recently seen poor treatment as VA backlogs keep them from the benefits they have earned.

Pennsylvania residents may be aware of one agency taking the steps necessary to avoid leaving these veterans hanging in the balance. The Social Security commissioner, Carolyn W. Colvin, recently announced that disability claims filed by veterans will be expedited to avoid undue delay. In order for claims to qualify the disability must be 100 percent permanent and total, evidenced in a Veterans Affairs Notification Letter. It is important to note that this newly implemented process does not guarantee claim approval, but merely speeds up the decision process. In order to qualify for Social Security disability, veterans must still meet eligibility requirements.

The Social Security disability claims process can be complicated. To qualify for 100 percent Permanent and Total, for example, a worker must show he or she cannot do the same work he or she did before, he or she cannot transition to new work because of his or her medical condition, and the disability has or will last for at least a year. Though these elements may sound easy to show, seemingly minor facts can throw a claim into the denied category.

Those who are denied Social Security disability benefits do not have to stop their fight. Instead, these individuals can seek the help of an experienced Pennsylvania attorney. He or she can help an individual with an inability to work seek to get a claim denial overturned. This may occur by showing proof of the extent of an injury or illness and how it disallows the claimant from working. Hopefully then the claimant can obtain the benefits he or she deserves.
