Motor vehicle accidents and whiplash: a common problem

Pennsylvania readers know that car accidents can cause serious physical harm, but many injuries that are seemingly minor are often overlooked. Whiplash is one of the most common types of injuries suffered in motor vehicle accidents. Although it is a rather common type of injury, victims who are left dealing with whiplash may not know what to expect during recovery.

Whiplash injuries are common from car accidents because it is caused by the motion of the head and neck when moved back and forth rapidly. Essentially, the head is whipped with significant force, often the result of a sudden stop or impact. These injuries may resolve over time, but they could also lead to lingering pain, stiffness and other discomfort.

Whiplash victims can suffer symptoms that include vision problems, pain, dizziness, headaches, and even chronic symptoms that include ringing in the ears, difficulty sleeping, memory and concentration issues and irritability. Treatment for whiplash injuries ranges from medication, either over-the-counter or prescription, to extended physical therapy. Treatment is determined based on the severity of the injury and the victim’s symptoms.

When motor vehicle accidents cause injury, victims have the right to seek a full and fair recovery. Even minor injuries can require extensive medical treatment, which can be costly and leave a victim with the burden of medical bills. Recovery from whiplash can take months or even years, but injured Pennsylvania drivers do not have to face the aftermath alone. After an accident, a complete case evaluation will determine if a person has grounds to seek compensation through a personal injury claim.
