Motorcycle accidents increasing at an alarming rate

On Behalf of | Apr 26, 2016 | Motorcycle Accidents

For many years motorcycle enthusiasts have been working hard to change the culture and image of motorcyclists, both inside and outside. It is critical for drivers to start seeing motorcycles on the road, and it’s equally important for motorcyclists to maintain their vehicles and observe all safety laws.

In spite of these efforts, however, motorcycle accidents in Florida and throughout the country continue to increase at an alarming rate. According to one study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation, motorcycle accidents have more than doubled in the ten years between 2000 and 2010. By understanding some of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents, hopefully both motorcyclists and other drivers can minimize this alarming trend.

What are the most common causes of motorcycle accidents?

While many motorcycle accidents can occur in the same way as other motor vehicle accidents, there are some accident causes that are particularly common for motorcycles, including:

Lane changes

It is much more common for a car, truck or other motor vehicle to collide with a motorcycle while making a lane change than to collide with any other motor vehicle type. Simply, a motorcycle is much smaller and harder to see in rear-view mirrors and blind spots. When changing lanes, car and truck drivers often simply don’t see motorcycles.

Left turn accidents

For some reason, it is more difficult to gauge the speed of motorcycle than other vehicles. Cars often turn left into an intersection right in front of motorcycles coming the opposite direction. It is critical for both motorcyclists and other drivers to be especially careful through intersections.

Cornering

Corners are always more dangerous for motorcycles. Because of the lean and centrifugal force involved, motorcycles are much more likely to crash on corners, especially when high-speed cornering. Even at reasonable speeds, however, gravelly and poorly maintained roads can also lead to cornering accidents.

Do everyything you can to avoid an accident. But if you or someone you love has been hurt in a motorcycle accident, talk with an experienced personal injury lawyer to get full and fair compensation for your losses.
